The Slovak Republic has enterd the history, as a new country, on 1 January 1993. It came being following the split-up of the former Czechoslovakia into two independent, sovereign states - the Slovak and the Czech Republic.

Geography

The Slovak Republic is located in Central Europe. Its area is 49,034 km2. The relief of the country is characterised by great difference in height. In northern and central Slovakia the countryside is hilly - covered with the Carpathian mountain range. in the south the hills slope down to join the Danube and East Slovakian Plains which are both important agricultural areas. The Danube is the most important river, creating a waterway connecting Slovakia with the Black Sea ports and, through the Rheim - Main - Danube canal, also with the West European ones. Nowadays Slovakia is becoming a crossroads of economic and trade routes between East na the West.

85.5 per cent of the total are Slovaks, the rest consisting of Hungarian, Czech, Ruthenian, Ukrainian, German, Polish and Romany national minorities. The most numerous one is the Hungarian minority - 10.6 %

 

The territory of Slovakia is situated in mild climatic belt with regular alternation of the seasons of the yer. The average temperature is 3,7° to 10° C. The warmest and driest areas are in the South Slovakian and East Slovakian Plains. The coldest month is January with night temperatures of -10° to 15° C, the hottest month is Julz with a daily maximum temperature of approximately 32° C. In winter there are often big temperature differences when the temperatures are lower in mountain valeys and higher on the surrounding hills. The alpine region has snow for 130 days.

The national symbols of the Slovak Republic are the national emblem, the netional flag, the netional seal and the national anthen.

Parliamentary democracy with a one-hous, 150 memberr Parliament (the Slovak National Council). At the head of the country is the President who is elected by the Parliament, the supreme executive body is the Government of the Slovak Republic.
 

Bratislava (452,053 inhabitans, 31.12.1995), residence of the Slovak President, seat of national, political, economic, social and scientific bodies and indtitutions. It is situated at the foot of the Small Carpathians, at the confluence of the Danube and the Morava, on the borders with Austria (2 km) and Hungary (13 km).
